family time

This past weekend was our annual family reunion.  My grandparents have been hosting this gathering at their home in northwest New Jersey with my grandfather’s extended family since I was a small girl.  The family has grown so much, and now my generation is getting married and having kids.  This means there will be lots of babies in the years to come.  Yay!  I hope the reunion tradition continues for years!

Kids make great photos!  They also make a family reunion really fun!  We had sack races, tug-o-war, a bean bag toss game, croquet, horseshoes, the pool, a pinata, model airplanes, and lots of super cool GIANT balls and bouncy things for the littler kids.  And at dusk, we set off ground fireworks and the kids played with sparklers and glow sticks.
If you read my reunion preparations post, then you know that my grandfather asked me in mid-May to take over the decorations and games for the reunion.  I readily agreed!  I was given a reasonable budget and tried to work with what I had on hand (I also borrowed a few beautiful things from my friend Wendy, my mom, and two of my aunts).

The day before the reunion, I solicited the help of my 7 and 10 year-old cousins who painted yellow and silver signs on plywood and tied those pretty little ribbons onto approximately 1000 coffee stir sticks. They were diligent workers.  Kathleen and I made 10 bright tissue paper covered lanterns.  I was going for a fun, colorful feel (AND a bit sophisticated – I played Sinatra-esque music and used lots of neutral and silver accents).  I love the combo of the bright pink/yellow/orange/lime with the neutral tablecloths and the sparkling touches of silver.

My absolute favorite decoration is the crepe paper piled into the tall apothecary jars.  I will definitely be using this for another party!  I also really like the way the crepe paper wrapped around the tent poles turned out.  Up for a game of Candyland, anyone?  🙂

I’m already excited for next year’s reunion.  Since I have an entire year to prepare, I can only hope it will be as awesome as Brooke Reynold’s family reunion!

till tomorrow,

Rebecca

P.S. Sorry the pictures aren’t the best quality.  I am currently using a little digital camera – I don’t even know what kind – and when I get a real job, a quality camera is one of the first things on my to-buy list.
