thrifty entertaining | game night

When entertaining guests, one of my favorite things to do is play games.  Cards, Taboo, Apples-to-Apples, Battle of the Sexes, etc.  You name it, I probably like playing it (although admittedly, I do not know how to play chess and I cannot stand games that require strategy).  Love a healthy dose of competition.

As part of my thrifty entertaining series (I’ve also shared ideas for a simple snack tray and a fall-inspired table centerpiece), I bring you game night inspiration.  Next time you’re at a thrift store or a yard sale, keep your eyes open for beautiful, vintage board games, decks of cards, chess sets, etc.  It’s difficult to beat sitting down in front of a cozy fire, playing games with friends, munching on popcorn and drinking hot chocolate.

Be sure to keep lots of games on hand (for large & smaller groups); if you have options your guests will definitely find something they feel comfortable playing.  And even if it’s only you and your husband/boyfriend/best friend/mom/etc., take the time to sit down, enjoy each other’s company, and get the competition on!  It’s important to approach your ordinary, everyday experiences as “entertaining,” making them enjoyable and beautiful.

Have a blessed Thursday, friends (and thanks for all the sweet comments on yesterday’s birthday party post!)

  2. we love game nights! recently we've been playing yahtzee and phase 10 since both allow for several people to play. i'm with you…the less strategy the more fun 🙂

  3. I love that thought – approaching everyday experiences as "entertaining," making them enjoyable and beautiful. Which means the sky's the limit! 😀

  4. I love game nights! I have to have one soon!

Cool chess set! I have to admit that I'll never have the patience for chess, but it does have a lovely mystique about it. I love seeing men play such a quiet game and with fervent, serious looks that would intimidate peyton manning. wonderful, fun photos, girl!

Playing cards is one of my favorite ways to pass the time (when I have time to pass). xo

What a fun idea. I thrifted a lovely briefcase last year that I haven't used much yet, a table top might be its perfect place:)

  8. I am completely enjoying this series!!! (being the fellow there're that I am!) I have never thought to look for thrifted games! Thanks for opening my eyes a little wider 😉 xoxoxo p.s.did you get my e-mail? I am not sure if it sent properly.

  9. That eagle graphic made me stop and do a double take. Is it a cup? Where did you get it? LOVE
