My little 14 year-old brother snagged a Smith-Corona Electra 120 typewriter this past weekend at Unique Thrift Store. I had to hide my envy when he found me in the store, typewriter in hand. I’ll keep my eyes open for a *better* one. It’s not all that old, but it is a typewriter, and it works. And boy, is it easy to make mistakes!
I decided I wanted to use the typewriter to make some art to frame, and absolutely love the way it turned out. To make your own, all you need is a typewriter (you could actually pretend and use a computer with a typewriter font, but that wouldn’t be as cool) and old school printer paper (aka dot matrix paper, which was also a Unique purchase from this weekend). For the text, I quoted my favorite excerpt from Pride and Prejudice.
(Yes, there are some typos – it’s hard to type with 100% accuracy when there’s no delete button…)
I made sure to pair this art with a black Ikea frame – I didn’t want anything too vintage-looking since the paper and the typewriter are already aged.
What do you think? Think you’ll make one?
What do you have planned for the weekend? I’ll be working (I recently got a communications internship!), inventorying all my props, and checking out this sweet antique shop/barn with my mom. And on Sunday, I’ll be heading into the city for Kinfolk Magazine’s Dinner Series after dinner social. I am just thrilled about this opportunity, meeting some new friends, and cannot wait to share about it with you all!
Hope you have a blessed weekend, friends!
till Monday,
Rebecca

I love this idea! My mind is spinning with ideas for what I would type up.
What a simple and awesome idea! I need me a typewriter asap! Have a ton of fun this weekend. I can't wait to hear about the Kinfolk social!!
This is such a great idea! And so simple to do! I LOVE Pride and Prejudice… so many good sections to choose from!
I have to use a typewriter at work occasionally to type on original signed documents, and it gives me the sweats I get so nervous. I am definitely of the ctrl+z generation.
That said, good call on the dot matrix paper…. remember THOSE computers. Green screens and that little flashing cursor!?!?!?!
so cute-great idea-maybe one day-i have no typewriter here-but my parents have some great old ones
This is SO creative!!!!!! I am absolutely in love that you used Pride & Prejudice! Amazing job =)

Oh, I love this idea! And I can't wait to hear about Kinfolk (I actually just discovered that phenomenon and am i n love!)
happy weekending!
That's an adorable idea; methinks typing up a poem by one of the classic poets…perhaps Robert Frost, Emily Dickinson, or even e.e. cummings.
I learned to type before the days when personal computers and the delete button were anywhere close to being common (how I'm aging myself here!) and it drives my husband starkers that I can talk with him and keep on typing away without looking at what I'm typing.
That's such a great idea! And I actually like the mistakes — it gives it some character!

this is soo cool! i love it. can can think of so many book quotes and scriptures that i would wan to do that with. i think they should have typewriters at libraries or Kinko's, cause how often do you need a typewriter? But when you need one, the computer doesn't hold a candle to the real thing. have fun with your big city social this weekend! i might venture out for some maternity clothes thrifting 🙂
So excited to hear about your Kinfolk experience! Seems like such fun!
so lovely! whenever i use a typewriter at work i am in heaven! whenever i am thrifting, i search my little heart out for a typewriter…yet to find a working one though! soon i will do this idea though, thanks! happy weekend! xx
That framed piece is BEAUTIFUL. We have a vintage one, too (It's our guestbook!), and now I'm totally inspired to make some art!
What a wonderful weekend, and a lovely new addition!
i love old typewriters, my parents both have em tucked away. the type looks so much better than like 99% of fonts! xx
Rebecca this is the coolest! It's crazy to me to think that typewriters are so vintage! Ugh! I typed on typewriters through high school and the beginning of college! I probably shouldn't admit that…
Love this idea, I've been thinking the same thing myself! Just need to get my hands on the perfect one too. 🙂

Rebecca if you are in the market for vintage typewriters, the Visiting Nurses Rummage Sale in Far Hills, NJ is where you will find a great selection. It is held twice a year on the first weekends of May and October. http://www.visitingnurse.org/news-and-events/rummage/ Dorothy
This is awesome.
