A Daily House to Home | Master Bedroom Makeover

After living in our 1920 Virginia farmhouse for almost two years, we’ve finally redone our master bedroom. We’re in the middle of our house-to-home process; the girls room makeover happened in December, and I’m planning on our kitchen makeover for this fall! Before moving here, I’d only decorated my bedroom (parents’ house and college dorm) and our first 450 square foot loft apartment. Learning how to make an empty shell feel like a home has been a learning process. It’s not necessarily the lack of things; I seriously verge on hoarder status. It’s more learning how to curate a comfortable living space. One that will easily evolve with our growing family. One that is full of meaningful pieces and treasures but not unnecessarily cluttered (still learning this one).

Our 10′ x 15′ bedroom started out completely empty, and then over the past two years, it just slowly became the overflow room. If I ran out of time before company arrived, I’d just clean up by placing all the things with no designated “place” up in our room. It’d take me weeks to reorganize our room, and we never spent any time – besides sleeping – in our room.

There were a few must-haves for our new room: I had to get rid of the overhead lighting (lighting DIY coming tomorrow), I wanted lots of plants, I needed white walls (our entire house was painted a warm beige which was very livable but too warm for my liking), and I wanted to spend time in our room when it was all over. The first step was emptying the room. I made a promise (to both Joe and myself) to only bring our absolutely favorite things back into the room, and keep it that way! I drastically paired down my wardrobe (we have a closet makeover coming soon), and it feels so good. We actually want to spend time in our room now.

I painted the walls with a favorite white from Benjamin Moore – chantilly lace. I decided against an eclectic “picture wall” and instead hung one statement piece. I LOVE the scale in our small bedroom. Lighting was always a problem (and neither of us wanted to turn out the light after hopping in bed), so we replaced the overhead light with a simple pendant & Edison bulb, and I helped (someone’s gotta take the pictures) Joe with a hanging bedside lighting DIY. Bedside lighting is my favorite. And I love being able to sit up in bed amidst a pile of comfy pillows or read a book on our new rocker (I’ve been eyeing this rocker for years; can’t believe it’s actually in our room now)!

I’m so grateful to the brands who sponsored our room makeover and made it possible: LoLoi Rugs, Smart Furniture, Color Cord, and Minted. Complete source list is below. Lighting DIY coming tomorrow!

RJM – THANK YOU <3 & it was truly a Gallop family effort 😉 At first, I had written, "and Joe helped with a hanging bedside lighting DIY" but he read my draft and was like, "Joe HELPED?!" So I changed it to reflect the truth ;))))
