With a tiny basket in hand, we explore the woods, our backyard, the side of the road, and keep our eyes open for “adventure treasures”! She loves seed pods, pinecones, bright colored leaves, trash, sticks, rocks, maple tree “helicopters”, etc. What kid doesn’t love going outside collecting treasures?

When we return home, we usually lay all our finds out on the kitchen table and arrange them by thing or size or color. Sometimes (when I know), we talk about what it is she’s found. This year, I’m planning to turn our adventure walks into a little school activity. We’ll start a notebook where we’ll paste some of her nature finds, make drawings, etc. I love teaching my girls about the world around us!

Earlier this week we took to the woods and went on Zoe’s first big girl hiking trip at Bear’s Den! Bear’s Den is located on the Appalachian Trail, and overlooks the Shenandoah Valley and Blue Ridge Mountains; it’s stunning. I teamed up with my friends at Zappos.com to show #HowIRoam in my Blundstones, and was really looking forward to trying out my new boots on our mama-daughter adventure. I recently ordered my boots through Zappos, my favorite place to order shoes. I’ve always had such wonderful experiences with their customer service, and their return policy is fantastic, especially for this mama who forgets to return packages for MONTHS!

I was amazed at Zoe’s strength and endurance on our hike! We walked in search of pinecones (we’re going to turn them into Christmas tree ornaments and gift them to some of our friends & family this year). We were hiking just before sunset, and the light was simply magical. Once we reached the overlook, we stopped for a quick snack and to take in the view. It was fun explaining to Zoe that her Nana lived somewhere off in the West Virginia distance. I can’t wait for Naomi to be strong enough to come along on these more difficult hikes!

My Blundstone boots passed the hiking test (and I’ve been wearing them EVERY day since they arrived…antique shopping, walking around town, errands, etc.). They’re comfortable, easy to slide on and off (love those pull tabs), and they provided great grip on the rocks and support for my ankles!

Thanks to my sister in law, Abigail, for beautifully capturing our time together.
