Simple Summery Strawberry Smash (with Vodka or Gin)

We’ve grown our own strawberries the past several years, but had some problems with our strawberry patch. The ants were literally getting to every single strawberry the moment it ripened, so we were getting few strawberries that weren’t destroyed by the ants. The patch was also taking over the rest of our garden, so we decided to start over this year, which meant none of our own strawberries this year. Which is fine, because we have the best local strawberry farm just 10 minutes from our home.

We went strawberry picking at Wegmeyer Farms last week and I’ve been making strawberry everything since then. It’s such a wonderful time of year, and freshly picked local strawberries just do not compare to strawberries you can buy at the grocery store. They’re so incredibly juicy, and they don’t have any of that icky, white styrofoam-like inside.

Here’s the recipe (if you can even call it that, I mostly just dumped a few things together) for my new favorite drink:

Simple Summery Strawberry Smash (with Vodka or Gin)
makes 2 drinks

Ingredients
3 tsp fresh lemon juice
2 tsp sugar
10 strawberries
3 ounces gin or vodka, divided
splash tonic water
crushed ice
2 sprigs of fresh mint

Directions
Divide lemon juice and sugar into two glasses. Reserve two strawberries, and slice the rest. Divide sliced strawberries into the two glasses and muddle. Fill glass with crushed ice. Add vodka and a splash of tonic water to each glass. Stir, and garish with reserved strawberries and a sprig of mint.
