How To Eat Oats: A Recipe for Simple Porridge

We’ve always been an oats family, and I feel like oats are really having a moment recently. So, I decided to start a “how to eat oats” series and share a few of our family’s all-time favorite ways to prepare our oats. Sometimes they’re raw, sometimes they’re cooked. They’re always scrumptious. Today’ I’m sharing a recipe for simple porridge. In future “how to eat oats” posts, we’ll look at raw oat bowls, our current go-to granola, an alternate porridge recipe, and baked oatmeal.

Here’s our recipe for the porridge that prompts all our kids to beg for thirds:

Our Favorite Simple Porridge

serves 4

Ingredients

  • 2 cups raw old fashioned oats
  • 4 cups water
  • Pinch flaky salt (this is my favorite salt, I use it for everything), for serving
  • Creamer of choice, for serving
  • Syrup (or honey or preferred sweetener), for serving

Directions

  1. Put water in small saucepan, add oats and stir.
  2. Cover and bring to a slow boil. Stir.
  3. Reduce to simmer.
  4. Stir frequently.
  5. Cook about 10 minutes, or until desired texture is achieved.
  6. Dish into bowls, sprinkle with flaky salt, drizzle with milk/cream and syrup. ENJOY!

Et voila, you have your simple porridge! Told you it was simple! And it’s so incredibly satisfying. Our kids BEG to eat this porridge every morning, and when we make it, they all ask for thirds. And of course, you could add anything to your bowl: nuts, seeds, dried or fresh fruit, etc. I prefer it on the simple side most mornings, but occasionally add hemp hearts, dried raisins, or chopped pecans. Blueberries are also a lovely addition.

Looking for other easy breakfast ideas? Here are a few of my favorites! I’ll be sharing a few other “how to eat oats” posts in the near future, to help us all in our oats-eating. How do you prepare your oats?
