project: tackle mom’s bookcase

My mom lives in a large farmhouse, different “sections” ranging from 35 to 300 years old.  The dining room and loft are about 300 years old, the living room, three bedrooms + a bathroom on the second floor are about 200 years old.  The kitchen is about 100, and the rest of the house was built by my grandparents about 35 years ago.

My parents bought this house from my grandparents in 1998 {I think….wow, time flies.}.  Over the past few years, my mom’s been updating the house room-by-room, and it’s looking quite crisp these days!  I love it.  The most recent project was to update the family room.  A few weeks ago, they painted the walls {a nice warm gray}, had the floor re-finished, and bought a new couch {so comfy!} but the room isn’t 100% back together yet.

This weekend, my sister Sarah and I tackled my mom’s built-in-wall bookcase.  These were built by my grandfather 30+ years ago.  I have a thing for books & I just love bookcases with objects and tons of color.  And light/white walls peeking through.

Here’s the bookcase we started with.  Aren’t the bricks great?

We brought the books back, stack-by-stack, getting rid of outdated, small paperbacks and the less attractive books.  We tried to organize by subject matter, but sometimes aesthetics won out.

Here’s the final product, after we collected various shiny, structured, and natural objects.

A close up of the chunky hammered silver vase.

We found these in the garage…the antlers from my brother’s first deer!  Why were these not yet on display?

My personal favorite object: larger-than-life hour glass.  Not really, it’s only about 10 inches high.  But I almost died when I saw this…every “hour glass” I’ve ever seen was part of a board game or was mom’s old egg timer.  How yummy and sleek is this hour glass?

Hope you all enjoyed your weekend!

till tomorrow,

Rebecca

I really like this one. The bookshelf looks great. But you never did get photos of the boots!

Oooo… it looks so good. Okay, I'm especially a fan of the hourglass.
